Edgewood College is an institution that is shaped around five Dominican core values– Truth, Justice, Compassion, Partnership, and Community. Though all are very important and hold great value, the one most important to me is compassion. Compassion is defined by Merriam-Webster as “sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it.” Having compassion to me is one of the greatest gifts we can give this world, because it not only helps ourselves, it helps others.
Helping others is something that is very important to me and is something that can be done very easily. In light of Random Acts of Kindness week, I think it is of great value for everyone to realize the huge impact that can stem from small acts of compassion. From complimenting someone’s smile to holding the door open, there are endless small ways we can positively impact someone’s day. When we brighten another’s day often times they will do the same onto another unsuspecting person. I think compassion is one of the most powerful values a person can hold because it allows us to connect with others in the world around us and make a change. Now get out there and show some compassion!
