Madison is a great city to be in during any time of the year! Even in the cold Wisconsin winters, there are still plenty of fun things to do! Here are some of my favorite winter activities in Madison:47834_10151299628425642_2035129213_nWinter Frost
One of my favorite activities that Edgewood puts on every winter is the annual Winter Frost dance held at the Monona Terrace. Our Winter Frost this year was just a couple weeks ago on Friday, February 15, and it was a lot of fun! Before the dance, Phil’s, our main dining center on campus, hosted a fancy dinner for the students and the food was delicious! The dance itself was a lot of fun too! The dance had both a live band and a DJ, a photo booth where students could get their pictures taken, and there were tons of delicious appetizers and desserts out all night!79Comedy Club
Going to the Comedy Club on State Street is one of my favorite activities to do any time of the year, but it is an especially great place to go on cold winter nights. On Thursday evenings, college students can get into the Comedy Club with their college ID for just $2! You are also required to get two drinks when you get there, but they have tons of fun non-alcoholic options to pick from! Edgewood’s Campus Activities Board also usually takes at least one trip to the Comedy Club each semester, and for just $5 your admission and two drinks are both included. It is always a fun time with a lot of laughs!union_south_20121206083456_320_240

Movies at the Union South
Every weekend there are free movies at UW Madison’s Union South Theater, and this is one of my favorite things to do in the cold winters! Typically they show new movies that have just left the movie theaters, and sometimes they show these movies even before they are out on DVD yet! I especially love showing up a little early and getting some famous Babcock Hall ice cream to enjoy while watching the free movie. In just the past couple weeks they have shown Looper, Wreck it Ralph, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Life of Pi, and Argo.14

Ice Skating
There are tons of great ice skating rinks located all over Madison, with the closest one to Edgewood being just 5 minutes away from campus at Vilas Park. Many of the ice skating rinks are free to skate on if you have your own skates or you are able to rent skates for a very cheap price. A lot of ice rinks even let you rent hockey sticks too. Last semester, Edgewood’s Campus Activities Board also took a trip to an indoor ice skating rink in Madison and it only cost $2 or $3 for everything – including transportation and skate rental!20101115w078

Athletic Events
Winter is an excellent time to get out and support some of the great athletic teams in Madison, including our very own Edgewood College Eagles. Both the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams have tons of games all throughout the winter, and Edgewood students can attend the home games for free! There is also a really fun event the basketball teams have every year called “Jam the Gym” where both basketball teams play back-to-back, and tons of students “jam” the gym to cheer them on! It ends up being a very fun event for the whole school. In addition to Edgewood athletic events, many students like to go off campus to support the UW-Madison Badgers in the winter to cheer on men’s and women’s hockey and basketball.

These are just a few of the many wonderful events going on during the winter in Madison. In just this past semester Edgewood College’s Campus Activities Board has also gone on a skiing and snowboarding trip, gone to the Kalahari in the Wisconsin Dells, taken trips to the movie theater, held craft nights, cookie decorating contests, and ping pong and pool tournaments and so much more! There is definitely always something to do when you go to school in a city like Madison!
