Q: What are some of your favorite things to do at Edgewood College?

A: Sit in the lounge with my friends, order pizza from Falbo Brothers, and watch a movie. I also like participate in the student events on campus such as Thursday Night activities and Grey’s Anatomy parties. I am highly involved with many organizations, which uses much of my time.

A: Go to interesting movies, discussions and events on campus. It seems like there’s always something going on! I also like just hanging out in the residence halls with my friends and relaxing after a busy week of classes. When the weather’s good I like to walk out on the boardwalk behind Mazuchelli and relax by the lake.

A: My favorite thing to do is to sit outside during a nice fall or spring day. It’s much better reading or doing homework outside in the sun then sitting in a dark corner somewhere. I also like to walk around campus or go to the art rooms before class and draw.

A: There are several different things that I enjoy doing on campus. One is just hanging out in the dorms with some friends either watching movies, playing cards, or talking and sharing laughs. Other things I enjoy doing at Edgewood are attending social events and organizations that are put on throughout the week or weekends and kicking back in the café with a cup of hot chocolate (or coffee if you prefer).

A: The oddest thing I have found on campus was the staircases. Some buildings are built into hills, so even though the building has three stories, the “ground level” changes depending on what side of the building you are on. If walking into Wingra from the patio you are on the 2nd floor, but you didn’t have to walk up any stairs. If you walk into Predolin lobby from the parking lot you are on the 1st floor, but if you continue along the Predolin hallway and leave through the doors facing Weber you have to walk UP stairs to get out. That took a lot of getting used to—where I could get out and what level I was on when I walked in.

A: One time, a fire truck was parked on campus and the firemen were pushing buttons on their truck and didn’t realize and they accidentally dispensed fluid that dribbled into our fountain in the front of campus. The fluid mixed with the water to create TONS of bubbles. Being a particularly windy weekend, the huge clumps of bubbles were blown all around campus. It was quite a silly sight.

A: The only thing I can think of is this one time my roommate (who was my neighbor freshman year) found a large centipede crawling around on her floor one day in the spring. We had to get one of the guys in the res hall to catch it and let it outside.

A: One of the oddest things I encountered on campus was seeing the baby turtles crawling around in front of Regina after they hatched. I’m not on campus very much so it was amazing to see that the turtles were so far away from the lake.

A: I have two jobs and use much of that money for grocery shopping, gas money, and entertainment- like going to see a movie, or going to a concert. And of course there’s shopping.

A: Most of the money I have for spending goes to things I run out of. For example, shampoo, toilet paper, etc.

A: Most of my spending money goes to buying pizza every now and then. Also when I run out of meal dollars on my ID I spend my money at Wingra. I tend not to spend a lot of my money because I don’t go off campus for “expensive stuff.” When I leave campus I take the bus, which is free. Then I will go to the mall or to State Street, but I usually don’t buy anything.

A: All the money I spend is what I make at work. Most of it goes toward gas to drive to and from Madison. Otherwise I’m trying to save so I can afford summer classes and a trip this year. If I have extra money, I do like to spend it on clothes.

A: Since I work and drive places a lot, I spend quite a bit on gas. Otherwise it’s the occasional shopping trips that I spend money but these trips are once in about four months. I try to save as much money as I can knowing that I have to help pay for school. I don’t use much money for on campus things because I use my ID card for food.

A: Obviously, I contribute to tuition. But for fun I spend money on renting movies, trips to Chicago, the ever present grocery bill/going out to eat, and tickets to plays or movies. I try not to buy clothes I don’t need, so that is a good way to save money for me.

A: FOOD! Mom and Dad are no longer there to stock your cupboards. For me, food is such a comfort thing. I love having what I had at home at hand when I might be having a bad day or just need to take a step back from studying.

A: Madison is basically the cultural center of the state. There are always many kinds of activities going on around town- many of them free and accessible by the bus (which is also free to Edgewood students). There’s the possibility to go to sports events, theatres, and great restaurants all within a 10 minute drive or a 30 minute walk from Edgewood.

A: I love that it’s always buzzing with people and activities and energy! I love the badger games and all the different concerts. I enjoy going to Edgewood and being able to mix with people outside of the campus with UW-Madison and MATC students. Though I could definitely do without the heavy rush-hour traffic and confusing bus schedules!

A: I have lived near Madison my whole life. The thing I like best about Madison is that almost everything you ever need is in Madison. I also like shopping in Madison because all of my favorite stores are close together. There really isn’t anything I don’t like about Madison. I don’t like that I haven’t figured out how to drive downtown yet but I’m working on it.

A: I think Madison is a great city to be going to college in. There are SO many opportunities for every kind of person. There are multireligious, multicultural, “things” to do everywhere and everyday. Many of the lectures and conferences are open to all the public as well. There are opportunities to explore different religions, get involved politically and many ‘extra-curricular.’ I like everything about Madison.

A: I love that there is always something to do no matter what kind of a mood you’re in. Shopping, hiking, music, relaxing… The only negative thing I really have to say is that it’s big! Which is also one of the main reasons I chose Edgewood. It’s just a bad thing because at first it’s pretty easy to get lost.

A: My advice for prospective students is to at least have a general idea of what you might want to major in. Don’t be completely set on it, because you will probably change you mind or question your choice at least once during your freshman year. You should also sign up for a tour of campus and sit in on a class that represents what you might major in. I also would caution those who are thinking about commuting from a longer distance. It doesn’t seem like it would be very hard but sometimes it is difficult to pay for gas and not be able to easily get involved with activities.

A: Get involved with activities on campus as soon as you can. It may seem like a lot to do, but it will help you with so many skills.

A: Always be open to new ideas and people. You will meet many people when you begin college so have an open mind. You may also have a room mate that you will have to live with, be courteous and respectful of each other and their belongings. Try new things, get out and get active in a group or just around campus. Basically start a new story of your life because that is what college is about.

A: Don’t be afraid to get involved in student organizations that interest you! It’s a good place to meet new people… I met most of my friends in student organizations! Also, no matter where you go, you will find people you connect with—don’t stay in your room and wait for them to find you, always try to introduce yourself to new people and get to know as many other students as you can.

A: I would definitely advise you to explore different sized campuses and find what’s right for you. Not every one will fit into a large campus and not every one will be truly happy on a small campus, so find out what you like! Also, once you start college, realize that it’ not just about taking classes and getting your degree, but getting an education beyond the classroom by exploring your city, experiencing new situations, and meeting new and different types of people. Your experience in college will help shape you into the adult version of you, and know that college is definitely an experience not to just try to whiz through. Cherish it and make the most of it!

A: Get involved in knowing your campus. It is really important to take tours, sit in on classes and even spend an overnight. If you are comfortable on campus, starting college will not be as scary and intimidating.

A: Come in with an open mind. College is a great experience and you’ll experience so many new things. Some you won’t like and of course some you’ll love. Either way… these are the days that shape you into who you are and what you’re becoming. A: Student Government Association which helps to voice the student body opinion on campus issues, disperses funds to students and student organizations and works to address student concerns.

Esperanza, a service organization, focused on supporting the Latino community in Madison.

EC3 (Edgewood College Communication Coalition), which is an organization for Communication Studies majors and minors, and works to build campus community through networking between organizations. They also host events that will help them learn about possible careers and internship possibilities.

International Club: Both International and U.S. students get together and have cultural outings. We also plan International Food Day.

A: I really like to be very involved on campus. I am Vice President of SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise), I am on the Executive Board of Student Ambassadors (the students that give you tours when you visit campus), Habitat for Humanity, the Honors Committee, and International Club.

A: I am involved with a number of organizations. I first got involved with singing with the church choir because of two students and one of the campus ministers. I am also involved with Faith Builders, which is a brand new organization on campus that helps students explore their faith with their peers. Esperanza is another organization. This club’s main focus is to tutor people in English. Esperanza is involved with Madison’s community Hispano center, as well as tutoring in one or two schools around the area. I tutor two of Edgewood’s maintenance staff two times a week. Lastly I am involved with SOS, which stands for Students Orientating Students. I help with the orientation of new freshman.

A: There is a great computer lab with free printing! There are both PC’s and Macs. It’s open from morning until midnight- so it’s a great resource. Also, the library has a great on-line catalogue as well as electronic periodicals and even links to paper writing resources such as refworks. There is some wireless internet which is great, but I hope the rest of the campus gets wireless soon. Also, my Edgewood is the EC site just for students, staff, and faculty, where they can find information about services and organizations on campus, as well as see events and announcements for the community.

A: There is a computer lab in the lower level of Regina with lots of computers. I think the technology here is pretty good. There has always been an open computer either in the lab or the library when I’ve needed one. The computers also have an up to date version of programs for students to use.

A: There’s free wireless internet on many parts of campus so you can bring your laptop to work on, as well as numerous computer labs all around campus. And any other technology that you would need, such as a video recorder, can be checked out for free from the Technology Assistance Center in the library.

A: Technology on campus is much better than the technology I have at home. The computers are fast at loading websites and have many different programs I have never even used before. It’s also nice that the school allows laptops to wirelessly connect as well.

A: There are many computers around campus which helps those students who need to print stuff between classes or those students who don’t have their own computers.

A: The Technology Assistance Center is really helpful on campus. Right away during my freshman year I got a virus that shut down my computer, but they got it running right away. There is wireless internet in the campus buildings. The librarians are always helpful in finding resources for classes.

A: Each of the rooms have internet access that are pretty fast. I don’t have a printer so I use the printers in the library. It’s so nice being able to use the printers for free. I haven’t had to use any of the equipment from the Tech Desk but people from my classes have for projects and they’ve turned out good so I’m assuming everything is up to par from the Desk.

A: I actually didn’t visit Edgewood initially because it didn’t offer the major I was intending but after I switched majors I knew Edgewood was where I wanted to be. I had moved in my friend a few years ago and simply by moving her into her dorm, I felt a sense of home at Edgewood. That was the main reason why I decided to transfer to Edgewood because of the feeling of welcome and home that I experienced a few years earlier.

A: Even though I applied to eight different schools, I only visited one. I visited UW-Richland and really didn’t like how secluded and small it was. I never saw any of the other campuses, including Edgewood. My aunt drove me through Edgewood one day and I decided I liked the looks of the campus. Students should get a tour of the campus to make sure they like it. I made a very risky decision by not looking at all the colleges I applied to but I was lucky that I chose one I love.

A: I actually visited a lot of colleges. During the summer before my junior year I started my college search and visited five. Marquette University in Milwaukee, Mount Mary in Milwaukee, Viterbo in LaCrosse, St. Norbert in DePere and St. Kate’s in St. Paul. After that I visited Viterbo, St. Kate’s, and St. Norbert one more time. When I saw Edgewood though, I knew I wanted to go here.

A: At first I really didn’t know what type of college I was looking for: big or small? In a small town or a big city? A private college or public university? But I was only able to decide what type of college was right for me by just visiting other colleges and realizing: “Wow, that was really neat!” or “Hmm… I don’t think I really want that aspect in my future college.” I visited about five campuses before I found my match and was able to realize what type fit me the best.

A: I visited one other school (St. Norbert College.) It seemed
like a great school, but the environment was not as stimulating (socially or politically) as Madison is. They are very comparable in size though and offered equal financial aid packages to me.

A: I’ve only been here for a semester but so far it’s been great. I’ve meet a lot of friends in my classes and I’ve got the chance to get to know my professor too. Considering I transferred I felt very welcomed at Edgewood and that made the transfer much easier for me.

A: When I first came to campus that first year it was like I was leaving my family for a new family. My dorm was so much fun and I met a lot of people. Once we all met it was like a new family was being created in the dorms, a very fun family. The community atmosphere created in the dorms definitely makes new and returning students very interested in college life.

A: I am currently a second semester freshman. I love it here at Edgewood. I haven’t gotten involved like I planned or wanted to. But right now I’m looking into a couple of different activities I would like to be involved with my sophomore year, including the Ambassadors, SIFE, and theatre.

A: To be honest, it was crazy, but crazy in a good way. Classes and things like that were a little stressful but the friends and activities were what helped me release that stress.

A: I thought that adjusting would be harder, but overall my freshman year was nice. I met a lot of new people. Freshman year has been challenging—I took harder classes and more course hours than most people. I also balanced a work-study job and new organizations. I enjoyed the challenge of doing something new and different. It was also hard not seeing my family and friends everyday, but I went home or called or emailed enough that I didn’t miss them terribly.

A: Like any new experience, it was definitely a mix of feelings. Of course it was weird being away from the friends and family I’ve been with for my whole life, yet it was exciting to be in a new place and make all new friends and kind of make a whole new beginning for myself. After getting the hang of how college classes ran, where everything was on campus, and how to use the bus system, my life was running pretty smoothly and only got more exciting as I tried more new activities and visited more new places in Madison.

A: Freshman year was difficult for me because I didn’t really connect to anyone at first. In October I even applied to a few other universities which I was accepted to. However, I ended up meeting my best friend and also found a major that really intrigued me. I am so glad I decided to stay at Edgewood—I have so many opportunities I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else.

A: I am just finishing up my freshman year here at Edgewood, and it has been great so far. I’ve met a ton of people I know I will keep in touch with for years. At first it was a hard adjustment having so much freedom. Although there are plenty of people willing to help you adjust, it was the first time in my life where I had to really decide what I was going to do on my own.

A: I really like the single dorm rooms for one, but I also love the small campus. It is very easy to find your way around and meet people. With the small campus and small class sizes, professors are very willing to take time to help you with anything. I also enjoy being in Madison because I am very familiar with the city.

A: I choose to attend Edgewood College because I appreciate their respect for college athletics at the division 3 level. The way the program is run like a division 1 school makes a student/athlete really strive to play like one. Once I started playing for Edgewood I began to see how the school is run like a team as well. Everyone collaborating and helping one another. Edgewood sports and non-sports are definitely a winning team.

A: Like a lot of students thinking about what college they want to attend, I had no idea. And like many students, I didn’t know what I wanted to do once I was in college. I applied to eight different colleges, some out of state, but I wasn’t getting enough financial aid from many of them, even with one of the higher GPA’s in my graduating class. When I got my financial aid packet from Edgewood, I was thrilled. I received a really good scholarship based on my grades. I had narrowed my college selection down to Edgewood or UW-Richland but I decided that I loved being in Madison too much to go to some other school. Edgewood also had some of the subjects I was interested in looking into, so I made Edgewood my choice.

A: I was born and spent most of my childhood in MIlwaukee and then moved to a small town. I really wanted to get back to a big city and finding Edgewood in Madison was a choice I couldnt pass up.

A: When looking at colleges I found that my stereotype school was a small private, Catholic school located in a big city. I looked at College of St. Catherine in Minneapolis, St Norbert in DePere and Edgewood. I ended up choosing Edgewood because I really loved the Dominican tradition. It is also only about two hours away from my home—Minneapolis is close to 6 hours and DePere is a mere 20 minutes down the road. I like the distance because it keeps me at school, but it is not impossible to go home if I want.

A: I really didn’t want to be some small fish in a big sea that never gets recognized and am just another face in the crowd. In an Edgewood class, it’s really neat because the classes are small enough that all your professors will know you by name and actually get a chance to get to know YOU as a person. Many will even give out their home phone numbers to make sure you can always reach them with questions or help on schoolwork. Plus, I love Madison with its fun nightlife and the Badger games- There’s always something to do!

A: I found out about Edgewood from my mom who went to Edgewood. I fell in love with Edgewood because it’s in such a culturally rich city with many opportunities. I also like that students are able and encouraged to get involved in leadership positions on campus.

A: When I first started my college search I was really interested in living in a big city but when I started hearing about the class sizes and total independence of large campuses it scared me a little bit. I graduated from a class of 120 students and wasn’t ready such a big adjustment. I was still interested in the big city lifestyle but a private college fit my needs educationally much more than a large campus. Edgewood has such a nice community feel to it while still being in the heart of Madison.
